The tobacco epidemic kills each year more than 6 million people, of whom 600,000 are passive smokers, i.e., nonsmokers who breathe secondhand smoke around them. Unless the picture is reversed through the adoption of public policies, the epidemic will kill more than 8 million people in the year 2030. More than 80% of these deaths are preventable, and are among people living in low and middle income countries.
