The Malaria Day in the Americas offers an opportunity for countries in the region to encourage the involvement of the various actors and stakeholders in the fight against malaria. The theme of this year’s campaign focuses on preventing the disease and sets as a goal the elimination of local transmission in areas where it is possible. Brazil, through the Secretaria de Estado de Saúde do Acre was a finalist for the award “Champions Against Malaria 2013”, which was won by Colombia (see details ) .
The Americas Region remains committed to achieving the overall goals of interrupting local transmission of malaria, including the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs ), with the long-term goal to interrupt local transmission of malaria in areas where it is considered possible. Malaria is a disease identified by PAHO, which has the possibility of being eliminated in some countries of the region, as indicated by resolution “CD49/R19: Elimination of neglected diseases and other poverty-related infections.”
The Malaria Day in the Americas, to be held for the seventh time on November 6, 2013, was conceived as a platform for countries in the region to carry out an aggressive campaign against the disease throughout the year.
