Chronic kidney disease and aging is the theme of the World Kidney Day 2014, which takes place on March 13th. Its main mission is to raise awareness on the importance of the kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and health problems associated with it worldwide.
Diabetes and hypertension, coupled with the aging, are the main risk factors for developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects one in ten adults worldwide, according to studies. The World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) encourages health care providers to incorporate tests or markers of kidney damage in patients at high risk, especially diabetes and hypertension, and encourage people to maintain healthy lifestyles.
