In 2020, the acute pandemic of coronavirus (COVID-19) has and continues to produce wide-scale death, suffering, and economic turmoil. During the pandemic, almost every person globally has been affected either by the virus itself or through the concurrent vast social and economic hardships that have ensued due to COVID-19. Meanwhile, another global public health crisis, one of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and especially hypertension (HTN), has relentlessly continued in the background of COVID-19. Though more insidious and in its onset and chronic in its presentation and natural history, when compared to COVID-19, the disease burden of CVD, of which HTN is the major risk factor, is likewise, far reaching and could be portrayed as a “chronic pandemic”. In addition, CVD and particularly HTN and their risk factors are significant co-morbidities for COVID-19. Thus, there is a substantial, real, and disastrous inter-relationship between the two. This webinar will explore the inter-relationship between CVD, HTN, and COVID-19. Where applicable, reference to key lessons that are being learned from the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which share similarities to the CVD and HTN public health crises will be discussed. The present state of the CVD crisis with specific attention to HTN and innovations to the detection and management of this chronic disease pandemic will be discussed. Finally, the webinar will conclude with a session entitled “Journal Club Headlines” in which two recently published manuscripts will be discussed. One of which explores the inter-relationship between COVID-19 and CVD and HTN, while the second puts forth a blueprint for the standardized treatment of hypertension including the stepwise development and implementation of a pharmacologic treatment algorithm.
