The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), with the support of the Government of Canada, has been working with over a thousand traditional midwives since 2021 to provide them with knowledge of warning signs to help prevent maternal and neonatal deaths. PAHO also helps bridge the cultural gap between traditional midwives and healthcare services to facilitate the respectful treatment of women. The Improved Health of Women and Adolescent Girls in Situations of Vulnerability (IHWAG) project was born out of the partnership with the Government of Canada, through Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
