In Colombia, the guidelines for the integration of Traditional and Complementary Medicines (TCAM) into the General System of Social Security in Health (SGSSS) were developed as part of a broader effort to recognize the country's multi-ethnic and multicultural composition. Since 1993, with the establishment of the SGSSS, the inclusion of traditional and alternative healthcare practices has been progressively standardized. The document distinguishes between traditional indigenous medicine, governed by the SISPI system, and complementary medical practices like Homeopathy, Chinese Medicine, and Osteopathy, regulated under the MTCA framework. Six key strategies guide TCAM development: strengthening health authority, inclusion pathways, service access, human resources, health technologies, and knowledge management. These technical guidelines reflect Colombia’s commitment to intercultural healthcare and its recognition of diverse healing traditions.
