This poster describes the inclusion of traditional medicine in Guatemala’s public health system through culturally relevant care guidelines. The Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) promotes respect and recognition for indigenous health systems and actors, and has created regulations and programs to integrate traditional medicine into formal healthcare. Initiatives include the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Program, creation of the Unit for the Care of Indigenous Peoples and Interculturality, and hiring of intercultural health facilitators. Emphasis is placed on medicinal plant gardens, phytotherapy, and collaboration between health personnel and indigenous midwives, in pursuit of harmonized, respectful, and culturally sensitive healthcare.
