Brazil is one of nearly 60 countries and territories where transmission occurs Zika virus by mosquitoes. People continue to travel between these countries and territories for various reasons, and the best way to reduce the risk of disease is to follow public health recommendations on travel.

According to WHO cancel or change the location of the 2016 Olympic Games would not significantly alter the international spread of Zika virus as reported.

WHO advises pregnant women not to travel to areas with ongoing transmission of Zika virus, including Rio de Janeiro. sexual partners of pregnant women returning from areas with circulating virus should be advised to practice safe sex or abstain throughout pregnancy.

People who consider traveling to the Olympic Games are:

  • Follow the travel advice provided by health authorities of their countries, and consult a health professional before traveling.
  • Whenever possible, during the day, to protect themselves from mosquito bites by using insect repellent and wearing clothing – light color preference – covering the body as much as possible.
  • Practicing safe sex (using condoms correctly) or abstain from sex during your stay and for at least four weeks after his return, especially if you are manifesting symptoms of infection Zika virus.
  • Choose accommodation with air conditioning (where windows and doors are usually kept closed).
  • Avoid visiting areas in towns and villages without running water or poor sanitation (areas ideal mosquito breeding), where the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes is higher.

PAHO / WHO provides public health advice to the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee and the Government of Brazil on ways to further reduce the risk of athletes and visitors contracting Zika virus during the Games. An important point of the WHO recommendations revolves around measures to reduce populations of Aedes mosquitoes that transmit chikungunya, dengue and yellow fever, and Zika virus.
