This report focuses on the question of how a partnership of international organizations can help to integrate a broader set of perspectives into the workings of the S&T communities, and can help these communities not only to generate new knowledge, but also to implement robust solutions to society’s most pressing development challenges. The report discusses the needs for new ways of doing business within the realms of science and technology, for instance, by creating participatory processes for defining research priorities; by integrating indigenous knowledge and grassroots technological innovation into formal research and development (R&D) endeavors; and by changing the incentive systems that structure the habits, practices, and norms of the research community. These suggestions are motivated by the fact that in some parts of the world, there is a widespread view of modern S&T as a largely a market-driven enterprise, dominated by an excessive technological optimism, with research agendas that often do not address the hardships faced by billions of impoverished people around the world¨...(Au)
