Aug 1-7: World Breastfeeding Week – WBW

The World Breastfeeding Week is part of a global action focused on survival, protection and development of children.
Created in 1948 by the World Health Organization – WHO, its goal is to promote campaigns targeted children’s health due to concern with infant mortality.
In 1990, WHO and UNICEF signed a document adopted by governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as by breastfeeding advocates from several countries, including Brazil.

The document called “Innocenti Declaration” presented four operational objectives:

• Establish a national coordinating committee of breastfeeding;
• Implement the “10 steps to successful breastfeeding” in all maternity facilities;
• Implement the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and all relevant World Health Assembly;
• Adopt legislation to protect women breastfeeding at work.

The World Week takes place in 120 countries and officially is celebrated 1-7 in August.
This year’s theme is: Breastfeeding and Work: Let´s make it work!
