International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, 2016

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) celebrates the commemoration of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples with all peoples of the Americas and the world.

The celebration is especially to honor the treaties and agreements that foster respect, interculturalism, harmony and peace. Health and development are part of these aspirations and therefore we unite to promote stronger alliances to achieve shared goals, including universal coverage in health. The Rights of Indigenous Peoples must be respected and protected in all areas, and their participation should be ensured in the formulation of decisions that affect them. In the Americas there are many efforts to address the health of Indigenous peoples within the framework of social determinants.

The right to land, access to clean water, drought, education about family planning, malnutrition and metal health among others, are some of the intersections approach to strengthen alliances and honor the treaties within an environment of equality, diversity and universality. In our region, some statistics draw attention and emphasizes the need for more focused action to improve the health of girls and boys, women and men, whose needs are often different.
